Assisted living in the state of Washington is termed by “assisted living” and no other name for licensing purposes. In 2012, Washington legislation changed the name of the licensing term for assisted living from boarding home to assisted living facility. The governing body that licenses assisted living facilities and nursing homes in the state of Washington is the Washington State Department of Social and Health services through the Aging and Long-Term Support Administration.
Washington assisted living facilities provide room and board, ADLs and some basic medical care. There are three different service levels of assisted living facilities in the state of Washington. The licensing depends on whether or not the residents can take their own medication or whether they need someone to administer it to them safely. Since 2012, there have been no more updates on licensing and legislation.

How to Choose the Best Assisted Living Facility in Washington
Are you aware that over 7 million people call Washington home? The state is so diverse that seniors who are about to retire readily choose it as their #1 option. This is not surprising since Washington has lots of beaches and mountain peaks. The weather at the Evergreen State is moderate and quite pleasant, with endurably cold winters and warm summers, thanks to the effect of the marine climate.
There are more than 3,000 assisted living facilities and adult foster care homes scattered throughout Washington. That means less stress for you if you were searching for the best place for a loved, aged one to retire to. However, here are some tips to keep in mind when it comes to choosing the best assisted living facility in the Evergreen State:
Floor Plans
Individual preferences differ, including that of your elderly loved one. Washington assisted living facilities with one-size-fits-all layouts are not ideal. You need to search and locate an assisted living facility with a wide variety of floor plans. A superior senior living community like this ensures the smooth transition of the residents from one place to another. And this makes it an excellent option for residents.
Facility Tours
High-quality assisted living facilities in the Washington state do not shy away from facility tours. This will allow you to check out the entire setup of the facility. You will also – at the end of the day – be able to make informed decisions about your choice of the community for your elderly one to live out their years.
On-site Health Resources
Most residents at assisted living facilities in Washington generally need medical care at one point or another. It does not even matter whether they have a pre-existing health condition that calls for acute care or they need monitoring. What is essential is finding Washington assisted living facilities with such on-site medical and health options.
So, look out for an assisted living community that provides a wide range of health services along with 24-hour on-site care. Assisted living facilities that offer additional services such as dental care, nursing assistance, pharmacy options, and lab services should be at the top of your list when the time comes to choose the best of them for your loved one.
Entrance Fee
Some assisted living facilities in the state of Washington require entrance fees before they can be accessed. This has proven to be costly and somewhat financially prohibitive, especially for people looking for state-of-the-art assisted living facilities on a budget for their loved ones.
Fortunately, most assisted living communities in the Evergreen State do not require entrance fees in order to participate in their programs. They, instead, offer a flat monthly access to every feature and amenity that is available on their respective properties.
Meal Plan
What about the meal plan: is it inclusive? It is not only about choosing the best assisted living facilities out there, but it is about ensuring they offer extensive and rotating meal plans.
The menu must have numerous options; if this is the case, then you can be sure that the residents – especially your loved one – are healthily nourished and well-fed.
Choosing an assisted living facility may be somewhat overwhelming. But if you know what your elderly loved one needs, then it shouldn’t be all that difficult to choose the best assisted living home in Washington.
Assisted Living Apartment Regulations in the State of Washington
In Washington’s assisted living facilities, 80 square feet for a private, single-occupancy room must be provided. If a resident shares the unit with other seniors, they must have a minimum of 70 square feet per resident. If the resident is under a program that is supported by and contracted with Medicaid funding under an assisted-living contract, then the facility for assisted living must provide a private room and a private bathroom for that resident. The private room in this case must be a minimum of 220 square feet, not including the bathroom area. Currently, a maximum of two residents are allowed per assisted living apartment in Washington. Under this licensing requirement, only one person shall occupy one room unless they decide they would like a roommate. A contract agreeing to this by both parties must be signed before they share a unit.
For the bathroom requirements, under this licensing there can be common use toilets, which means shared. One toilet and one sink are required as per every 8 residents in an assisted living facility in Washington. Every 12 residents have to have a bath or shower unit available. If the resident is under contract with the state in a Medicaid program, a private bathroom will be required for them.
